A proper business network includes a commercial-grade firewall, managed switches, business WiFi access points, structured cabling, and proper documentation. Consumer equipment (home routers) is not appropriate for business use.

Essential Components
1. Business-Class Firewall/Router
NOT a consumer router from Best Buy
Features needed: VPN, content filtering, intrusion prevention
Recommended: Fortinet, SonicWall, Meraki, UniFi Dream Machine Pro
Budget: $500-$2,000 depending on size
2. Managed Network Switches
Allows VLANs, traffic monitoring, PoE for phones/cameras
Recommended: Cisco, Meraki, UniFi, Aruba
One switch per 20-24 devices, plus uplink ports
Budget: $300-$1,000 per switch
3. Business WiFi Access Points
NOT consumer mesh systems
One AP per 2,500-3,500 sq ft (varies by construction)
Power over Ethernet (PoE) for easy installation
Recommended: Meraki, UniFi, Aruba, Ruckus
Budget: $200-$500 per access point
4. Structured Cabling
Cat6 or Cat6A for future-proofing
Proper patch panels and cable management
Test and certify all runs
Budget: $150-$300 per drop (installed)
5. UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)
Protect firewall, switches, and servers from power issues
15-30 minutes runtime for graceful shutdown

2Network Design Principles
Segmentation (VLANs)
Don't put everything on one flat network. Segment by:
Corporate (employee computers)
Guest (visitor WiFi)
Servers (if on-premise)
IoT/Cameras (printers, security cameras, etc.)
Voice (if using VoIP phones)
Why VLANs Matter:
Limits blast radius if one device is compromised
Guest WiFi can't access internal resources
IoT devices (often insecure) isolated from computers
Bandwidth Planning
Calculate your needs:
Basic user: 5-10 Mbps
Video conferencing: 10-20 Mbps per concurrent call
Cloud-heavy office: 20-50 Mbps per user
Example: 30-person office
30 users × 15 Mbps average = 450 Mbps
Add 30% headroom = ~600 Mbps
Recommendation: 1 Gbps fiber connection
Redundancy Considerations
Second internet connection from different provider
Automatic failover at firewall
Critical for businesses where downtime = lost revenue
3WiFi Design Tips
Coverage vs. Capacity
Coverage = Can you get a signal? Capacity = Can everyone connect at usable speeds?
Most businesses under-plan for capacity.
Access Point Placement
Conference rooms need dedicated APs (video calls are bandwidth-heavy)
Open offices: One AP per 1,500-2,500 sq ft
Mount APs on ceiling for best coverage
Avoid corners and edges
Channel Planning
Don't let APs auto-choose channels
Manually assign non-overlapping channels
Use 5GHz for primary connectivity
Reserve 2.4GHz for IoT devices that require it
WiFi Security

Mistake 1: Consumer Equipment
That $200 router from Best Buy handles maybe 10-15 devices reliably. It will fail under business load, has minimal security features, and won't be supported.
Mistake 2: No Documentation
You should have:
Network diagram showing all equipment and connections
IP address assignments
WiFi passwords and admin credentials
Vendor support information
ISP account details
Mistake 3: Flat Network
Everything on 192.168.1.x = one compromised device can attack everything else. Always segment.
Mistake 4: Ignoring Physical Security
Network equipment in locked closet/room
Cable runs not accessible to visitors
